Today, I took in the regional final game of men;s basketball with Wisconsin taking down Arizona. This was a pretty well played game and highly entertaining as Wisky beat 64-63.I will go straight to the overtime and break it down from second half to first and a look at the officials and my constant irritation with Steve Kerr.
Frank Kaminsky was huge for Wisconsin as was Aaron Gordon of Arizona. I disagreed with Arizona’s coach Sean Miller keeping Kaleb Tarzewski out of the game at the end. I though Gordon and Tarzewski should have been on the floor at the same time to help slow down Kaminsky.
Kaminsky’s tip in helped Wisky win the game to make it 64-61 before a bucket by Arizona. But then came the drama. Nick Johnson of Arizona tried to get the Wildcats a win but he was called for an offensive foul with a little over three seconds left. There should not have been a foul call at that time. On the foul Johnson missed the shot and the game should have been over.
But Wisky got the foul and another close play came up. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was all over Traevon Jackson and another foul should have been called. The ball went out of bounds and Arizona was awarded the ball. After looking at the play, I could not tell who it went off of.
The call Arizona’s way. Thankfully, the Badgers wound up winning the game. I am so proud of Bo. As it turned out this year, I like Arizona with Sean Miller. I did not like the Lute Olson Wildcats. Anyways back to the game, Nick Johnson took way too long to shoot a jumper as I thought he felt he had a year to shoot it. The shot was off and the Badgers were final four bound.
The Second Half
Tarzewski picked up where he left off in the first half scoring wise. This is why I questioned why he was not on the floor. Marv Albert also said Gordon was guarding Kaminsky. Once again I was questioning this move. Steve Kerr said losing T.J. McConnell to three fouls early in the half was critical for Arizona
Kaminsky is an absolute stud. He hit threes and went inside in the second half. Johnson of Arizona played much better down the stretch.
Just before the ot Jefferson had a huge dunk to tie it and Jackson just missed a jumper as the game went into overtime.
The First Half
This game got rolling with Kaminsky and Tarzewski going at with the posts. I also enjoyed watching Wisconsin run the straight flex offense. But what separates Bo Ryan, is he does not run the standard flex which he calls the swing offense the whole time. He had a lot of different cutting action in the game.
I thought Nighel Hayes showed a lot of Wisky in the first half. I thought Nick Johnson got off to a slow start. Additionally, I thought Arizona left a lot at the line with missed free throws. They missed five in the game per ESPN.com.
There were a lot of travels called travels that should not have been and there were travels that should have been called travels. In the second half, there was a ticky tack call on a back screen. Back in the day, I got away with moving screens all the time. It is called more now these days. The Ben Brust offensive foul cutting into the lane was bad as well. Jackson wallked on a lay-up he had late in the second half.
Steve Kerr has annoyed me since his days with Arizona. This tournament has been no different. In Saturday’s game, he made it appear the coaches were thinking what he was thinking. Kerr is way off base. He practically ruined my viewing of North Carolina in the tournament. The only good thing he said about this game was Wisky played great defense..
